What is Biofilm?
Biofilm is the clinical term for dental plaque. It is formed of groups of microorganisms containing bacteria and other organisms that grow on surfaces in your mouth, including your teeth, gums, tongue and cheeks.
What causes too much Biofilm?
Does it matter if you have too much Biofilm?
Excessive biofilm is a major threat to oral and overall health. It’s the primary cause of dental decay (caries) and gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis), as the bacteria within biofilm produce acids that damage teeth and inflame gums. Beyond oral health, excess biofilm and the resulting gum disease have been linked to systemic health problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes and respiratory infections. Furthermore, too much biofilm can cause bad breath, tooth discolouration from staining, tartar buildup, and discomfort like gum inflammation, bleeding, and sensitivity, ultimately increasing the risk of tooth loss.
How do you remove Biofilm?
At Dental Bees, our hygiene appointments focus on professional biofilm removal, a crucial step in maintaining oral health. These cleanings address plaque and tartar buildup that home care alone may miss, and are especially vital for the long-term success of dental implants. We recommend these professional biofilm removal sessions every 3-6 months for our implant patients.
